‘US misled us over Iraq WMD claims’ – ex-UK PM Gordon Brown
A US report disputing the size of Iraq’s supposed stockpile of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) prior to the 2003 invasion was not shared with the UK government, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said.

Writing in his newly published memoir, the then-Chancellor in Tony Blair’s Labour government said he believes the US deliberately withheld information, adding that he felt the UK was “misled” on the issue used as justification for the war.

"If I am right that somewhere within the American system the truth about Iraq's lack of weapons was known, then we were not just misinformed but misled on the critical issue," he says in ‘My Life, Our Times.’

Brown said that, in the build-up to the invasion, he had been briefed that the intelligence services had detailed knowledge of where the weapons were being stored.

“I remember thinking at the time that it was almost as if they could give me the street name and number where they were located,” he writes.

But a report commissioned by then-US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in September 2002 challenged this assessment, saying that the intelligence was based on “analytic assumptions.” The US report, which disproved the assertion that Iraq was capable of making WMDs, was leaked last year.

“It is astonishing that none of us in the British government ever saw this American report,” Brown writes. “It is now clear how forcibly this report challenged the official view.”

Citing the report’s claim that Iraq was incapable of targeting the UK bases in Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey with missiles, in contradiction of the now infamous WMD dossier, Brown is pointed in highlighting Rumsfeld’s role in the apparent misdirection.

“Rumsfield was informed: ‘We doubt all processes are in place to produce longer-range missiles,” the former PM writes.

Published in July 2016, the Chilcot Report into the UK’s involvement in the Iraq War found that Tony Blair’s government had joined the invasion before all peaceful options had been exhausted.

Sir John Chilcot, the retired civil servant appointed to chair the review, also found that “judgements about the severity of the threat posed by Iraq’s WMD were presented with a certainty that was not justified.”

The review, which took almost seven years publish, is similarly critical of the way the intelligence was examined by Tony Blair’s government. “It is now clear that policy on Iraq was made on the basis of flawed intelligence and assessments. They were not challenged, and they should have been,” the report read.

Shattered US-Russia ties ‘greatest threat’ to world peace – German FM
The “completely shattered” US-Russia relationship is the greatest threat to peace across the globe, the German foreign minister warned. The world will see more uncertainty should Moscow and Washington fail to find common ground.
Should Moscow and Washington fail to mend ties, “our children will be growing up in a dangerous and uncertain world increasingly armed with nuclear weapons,” German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel told Bild am Sonntag in an interview on Sunday, as cited by Merkur. “The completely shattered relationship between the US and Russia is the greatest threat to world peace,” Gabriel said, also citing the deployment of nuclear-armed intermediate-range missiles in Europe, which is “more than likely.” According to the foreign minister, Germany should become “a power for peace” instead of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s approach of “running after Trump’s armaments plans.”

Gabriel, a strong critic of US President Donald Trump, has in the past called Trump “a threat to peace,” and urged Merkel not to cave in to Washington’s demands to ramp up Germany’s military spending. In mid-August, Gabriel said that “submission to Trump’s armament policy is wrong and unnecessary,” adding that “the logic of deterrence” against perceived threats from Russia risks further escalation. He also accused Trump, who he says sees the world as “an arena or a battleground,” of promoting “the law of the strongest.”

This is not the first time high-ranking members of the Social Democratic (SPD) party have slammed Trump for his foreign policy. In January, then-Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier wrote in an opinion piece that the 20th century world order came to an end after Trump took office, and that “turbulent times” lie ahead.Twenty US B61 nuclear munitions are reportedly stockpiled at a military base in Buechel, Germany. Yet, Washington did not confirm that officially.

US-Russia relations have steadily deteriorated in recent years, after the 2014 coup in Ukraine, followed by a massive NATO buildup in eastern Europe. The latest flare-up in tensions came earlier this year, when the US Congress imposed new sanctions on Russia. Moscow reduced the number of US diplomatic personnel in Russia to 455 afterwards.

Washington responded with hostile actions in September, telling Russia to close its consulate-general in San Francisco and trade missions in Washington and New York. Moscow insisted that its diplomatic property was “seized illegally.” There are reports that President Trump may meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Danang, Vietnam next week. “Putin is very important because they can help us with North Korea. They can help us with Syria. We have to talk about Ukraine,” Trump told Fox News. He tweeted in August that relations between the US and Russia were “at an all-time, very dangerous low.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday he could not rule out “the possibility of holding such a meeting, and it is actually being coordinated now.” He added that the importance of any potential contact between the presidents of Russia and the US “for all international affairs can hardly be overestimated.”

Paradise Papers: Queen has millions invested offshore in predator firm preying on UK’s poorest

Paradise Papers: Queen has millions invested offshore in predator firm preying on UK’s poorest
A large cache of leaked documents has revealed that more than £10 million of the Queen’s private wealth has been invested offshore and in a UK company accused of preying on Britain’s poorest people.

Details of the investments were leaked as part of the Paradise Papers on Sunday, a trove of more than 13 million documents from the world’s leading offshore law firms released through the International Consortium for Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), of which the BBC is a part.

More than 120,000 people and companies have been identified during the leak, including Queen Elizabeth II.

A spokesperson for the Duchy of Lancaster told the BBC: “We operate a number of investments and a few of these are with overseas funds. All of our investments are fully audited and legitimate. The Queen voluntarily pays tax on any income she receives from the Duchy.”

According to the leaked documents, the Duchy of Lancaster invested $7.5 million of the Queen’s private income and financial portfolio in Dover Street VI Cayman Fund LP in 2005.

Files from offshore law firm Appleby reveal that the fund made investments in pharmaceutical and high-tech companies, including a company that developed fingerprint technology for mobile phones.

The Queen’s estate received about $360,000 from its investment.

The papers also revealed that the Dover Street fund bought a small interest in something called ‘Project Bertie,’ which involved the takeover of rent-to-buy company BrightHouse, a company slammed by consumer watchdogs for selling household items on payment plans with annual interest rates as high as 99.99 percent.

Dover Street VI Cayman Fund LP also purchased a 75 percent stake in First Quench Retailing Ltd, which included the off-licence chain Threshers that went into administration in 2009.

Chris Adcock, chief finance officer for the Duchy, told the Guardian it had been unaware of the indirect holding in BrightHouse.

“Investors commit to a fund for a given period and are not party to its ongoing investment decisions,” he said.

“We are not aware of any tax advantages to the Duchy in investing in offshore funds.

“The Duchy’s investment policy is based on advice and recommendations from our investment consultants and asset allocation, rather than tax strategy.”

Royal officials told the Daily Mail that the Queen had no direct involvement, and they were “not aware of any tax advantages.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the information revealed by the Paradise Papers proves that “there's one rule for the super-rich and another for the rest when it comes to paying tax.”
