Iraq's Hezbollah Al-Nujaba Ready to Liberate Syria's Golan Heights

TEHRAN (FNA)- Sheikh Akram al-Ka'abi, the leader of Iraq's Hezbollah al-Nujaba, underlined his forces' preparedness to cooperate with the Syrian Army troops to liberate the Golan region occupied by Israeli forces, an Arab media outlet reported on Monday.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news network quoted al-Ka'abi as saying that al-Nujaba fighters are well-prepared to take part in an operation to liberate the Golan Heights from Israeli occupation if Damascus asks for al-Nujaba's assistance.

In the meantime, al-Ka'abi pointed to the presence of ISIL and other terrorist groups in Wadi Hooran and Wadi al-Qadaf regions in Anbar desert near the border with Syria, adding that the terrorist group has been provided with intelligence support by the US-Arab intelligence services as the US forces are preventing Iraqi planes from approaching the terrorist-held regions in the Western part of the country to identify and record their movements.

Al-Ka'abi said in February that the ISIL terrorist group was implementing an Israeli-initiated road map under the supervision of the US with the cooperation of Turkey and Arab states of the Persian Gulf in the region.

"And our presence in Syria is aimed at resisting against this plot," Ka'abi underscored.

He further underlined Iraqi al-Nujaba movement's full readiness to take part in a war to liberate Israeli-occupied Golan Heights shoulder to shoulder with the Syrian Army soldiers.

Iraqi Leader Accuses US of Providing Intel to Terrorists in Albu Kamal Battle
TEHRAN (FNA)- The US forces were backing up the ISIL terrorist group with intelligence during the Syrian Army troops' operation to liberate the town of Albu Kamal in Southeastern Deir Ezzur, Secretary-General of Iraq's al-Nujaba Resistance Movement Sheikh Akram al-Ka'abi said on Sunday.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news network quoted Sheikh al-Ka'abi as saying that the US forces tried hard to push the Syrian army's operation in Albu Kamal towards failure, adding that the US forces were targeting the pro-government resistance forces before Albu Kamal battle in order to slow down their advances.

He further added that the resistance forces, however, foiled the US plot.

Al-Ka'abi went on to say that the US forces were providing the ISIL with intelligence about Albu Kamal battle conditions, adding, "We came to know the US intelligence support for the ISIL via the terrorists captured by al-Nujaba in Southeastern Deir Ezzur."

An Arab TV channel said on Tuesday that Iran's IRGC Quds Force Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani came to pick up leadership in the capture of ISIL's last stronghold, Albu Kamal, after the US staged a sophisticated plot to force the Syrian army back and win the upper hand in the region.

"Declaration of Albu Kamal's liberation and then rapid withdrawal (of the Syrian army forces) from the same town created a new and major challenge for the Americans; therefore, they attempted to weaken the Syrian army and its allies in the battle in the city," al-Mayadeen reported on Tuesday after the Syrian army won back Albu Kamal.

It quoted a field commander in Albu Kamal as saying at the time of the capture that "when we declared liberation of Albu Kamal, we were still in the T2 Station but we were forced to declare its liberation to prevent the (US-backed) Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from entering the town".

"Today, we were near Albu Kamal from three sides; the Americans were trying to prevent air flights over the region and they were after weakening us in Albu Kamal but we were determined to fully liberate it," he added.

Al-Mayadeen said the field commander's remarks show why the operations room control was entrusted to General Soleimani, explaining that the resistance front was trying to foil the US plots to seize leadership in the region.

FARSNEWS2017/11/26
US Turns Kurdish-Held Regions in Syria into Training Camps for Terrorists
TEHRAN (FNA)- Washington has set up a number of military training camps for terrorists in the regions that are under the control of the Kurdish fighters to pave the ground for the disintegration of Syria, a Turkish media outlet reported on Sunday.

The Turkish-language Yeni Safak daily reported that the US has continued to arm the Syrian Kurds although annihilation of the ISIL in most of the country.

In the meantime, the US has established more military bases in the regions controlled by the Kurds.

The paper said that the US forces have deployed over 7,000 soldiers in 13 military bases in a region as large as 38,000 sq/km, adding that the US army is providing weaponry and logistic supports for 15 terrorist groups.

The daily quoted well-informed sources as saying that nearly 5,000 foreign terrorists are under military training at the US bases in the Kurdish-held regions to carry out terrorist operations.

A report said last month that many analysts wondered about the Kurds' refusal to reveal any details over the scale of US support to the mostly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the number of military facilities the US set up in Northern Syria.

The US continues to arm the Syrian Kurds, even after the announced retaking of Raqqa from ISIL.

Nuri Mahmud, an official representative of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), the primary component of the US-backed SDF force which conducted Raqqa operation, confirmed that the US was supplying them with arms since the liberation of Kobani in 2015, the Sputnik reported.

Mahmud, however, refused to reveal the scale of the arms provided by the US, only noting that it was relatively humble and not enough in comparison with the weaponry it supplied to the Iraqi army for the liberation of Mosul.

The Kurdish official called their relationship with Washington a "strategic alliance" and confirmed that the US was setting up military bases on territories which the Kurds take under control.

According to Nuri Mahmud, these facilities were used for the fight against ISIL. However, he refused to give the exact number of operating US bases.

"We can't discuss this issue. It is none of our business," he told Sputnik.

Abdulaziz Yunus, the SDF representative in charge of foreign affairs, also confirmed that the US continues supplying arms to SDF, and remains the only power which was supporting Kurds militarily.

The Kurdish official, however, as well as Nuri Mahmud, refused to reveal the amount of weaponry they received.

"The US is supplying us with ammunition based on our demands. Apart from coalition forces, no one else supports us with weaponry. We won't disclose the exact volume of the provided arms but hope that the deliveries will increase as it will enable us to liberate other regions from terrorists," he explained.

Abdulaziz Yunus stressed that the interests of SDF coincide with those of the US, and that they would continue their cooperation.

Washington had supported the Free Syrian Army, but this didn't yield any results. That is why, after the liberation of Kobani, the US decided to support them and has been satisfied with this arrangement, he concluded.

Ex-Netanyahu Aide: Saudis Ready to Sacrifice Palestine for Israel Ties
TEHRAN (FNA)- A former adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saudi Arabia is ready to sacrifice Palestinians and their demands for closer ties with Israel.

Yaacov Nagel, who stepped down as the premier’s internal security advisor earlier this year, said the kingdom would approve of almost any agreement between Israel and the Palestinians to further “normalize” relations with Israel, Telegraph reported.

“They don’t like the Palestinians more than us or less than us. They need to say that there is an agreement in order to take next steps toward normalization. So this is still an obstacle,” Nagel said.

Egypt and Jordan are the only two Arab governments that have official diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv and host Israeli missions. The rest of the Arab governments have no open diplomatic relations with the Israeli regime, and have been trying to portray themselves as Tel Aviv's traditional adversaries and upholders of the Palestinian cause of ending the Israeli occupation.

Netanyahu has, however, admitted that his regime had ties with the Arab world, and that the relations were improving.

And in historical comments, Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said on November 19 that Tel Aviv had had covert contacts with Saudi Arabia.

“We have ties that are indeed partly covert with many Muslim and Arab countries, and usually [we are] the party that is not ashamed,” he said in an interview on Army Radio.

Israeli officials have, meanwhile, made no secret about their affinity with the Saudis and their allies being mostly about establishing a single front against Iran.

Nagel likewise said Riyadh was so keen to begin open cooperation with Israel against Iran that it “doesn’t care” what kind of deal is reached with the Palestinians, the paper reported. “They don’t give a damn about what will be in the agreement,” he noted.

Saudis ‘don’t give a damn’ about Palestinians, want Israel’s help with Iran – fmr Netanyahu adviser

Riyadh, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in particular, would approve any kind of Israeli-Palestinian deal to finally get rid of this “PR obstacle” and unite with Tel Aviv against Tehran, a former security advisor to Benjamin Netanyahu believes.

While officially Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have diplomatic relations, more than a decade ago Riyadh proposed an initiative which would see the normalization of relations between Arab nations and Israel. Among its demands, the Arab Peace Initiative, endorsed by the Arab League, calls on the Jewish state to withdraw from the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, and achieve “a just solution to the Palestinian Refugee problem.”

Despite the reinstatement of pre-1967 borders still being the primary reference point in any discussions for a peaceful settlement between Israel and the Palestinians, Saudi Arabia will likely accept any kind of deal between the rivals, believes Brig. Gen. Yaakov Nagel, who served as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s national security director from January 2016 until May 2017.

“Everyone knows that the Arab Peace Initiative doesn’t have any meaning. There are things inside that don’t hold water,” Nagel said this week. “They [Saudis] just have to say there’s an agreement between Israel and Palestine. They don’t care; they don’t give a damn what will be the agreement.”

But Saudi Arabia will face a PR problem if it seeks closer ties with Israel, so it is ready to endorse any piece of paper as a legitimate deal to claim that the Palestinian issue is resolved and it is time to move on, believes Nagel.

“They don’t like [the Palestinians] more than us or less than us. They need to say that there is an agreement in order to take next steps [toward normalization]. So this is still an obstacle,” Nagel said, adding that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is leading the country in the right direction.

Relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia have witnessed a seeming rapprochement this month, after Saudi Arabia accused Iran and its regional Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, of meddling in Middle Eastern affairs and arming the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Israel has long viewed Iran and Hezbollah along the same lines, and a threat to its own existence.

Just this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that Israel is covertly cooperating with some Arab nations. Ties with the Arab world, including Saudi Arabia, were also confirmed recently by Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz. Earlier in November, IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Gadi Eizenkot, told Saudi Arabia’s Alaf newspaper that his country was ready to share “intelligence information” with Riyadh on Tehran.

However, despite such unprecedented developments Saudi Arabia firmly rejects reports that it is working with Israel. “The Arab conditions are clear − two states with a Palestinian state whose capital is East Jerusalem. As for other issues, they can be worked out between Israelis and Palestinians. Arab nations’ position has always supported the Palestinian brothers. That remains the Arab position,” Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Egypt’s CBC television on Monday.

Report Emerges of New Saudi-Israeli Stunt

FARSNEWS2017/11/25
Report Emerges of New Saudi-Israeli Stunt
TEHRAN (FNA)- Two senior Saudi Arabian officials, both of whom formerly served as government ministers, reportedly visited a synagogue in the French capital in what Israeli media have depicted as “a historic first.”

Israeli daily The Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday that Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Issa, who is the head of a Saudi government-funded organization and a former justice minister, and Saudi Ambassador to France Khalid bin Mohammed al-Angari, an ex-education minister, had made their visit to the grand synagogue of Paris this week.

Issa is also an official adviser to the royal court in Riyadh and to the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The visit came amid numerous reports suggesting growing ties between Tel Aviv and Riyadh. The two sides have no diplomatic relations but are known to be in secret contact.

While there have been many reports of those secret ties, individual instances of Saudi overtures to the Israeli regime are often depicted as singular and “surprising” incidents.

The two Saudi officials who visited the Paris synagogue were hosted by France’s chief rabbi, Haim Korsia, and the synagogue’s rabbi, Moshe Sebbag. Sebbag expressed “surprise” over the visit.

“This was very exciting. This was their first time in a synagogue, and I was frankly surprised that they came,” he said.

Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli regime had “secret” but “fruitful” cooperation with Arab governments, noting that peace between his regime and Arab capitals would “happen in the end.”

Earlier this month, Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said that Israel had covert ties with Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.

His comments came one day after Israeli minister of military affairs Avigdor Lieberman called on Arab states to befriend Israel and team up against Iran.

On November 16, Chief of Staff of Israeli military, Lieutenant General Gadi Eizenkot, said Tel Aviv was ready to share intelligence with Saudi Arabia in their joint efforts to confront Iran.

He said that in a first ever interview by an Israeli military official with a Saudi media outlet.

On November 14, Lebanon’s al-Akhbar newspaper published a secret undated letter from Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in which Jubeir put forward a plan to normalize ties with Israel despite “risks” of a public backlash.

Back in September, reports emerged about a secret visit by bin Salman to Israel, where he held consultations with senior Israeli officials over “regional peace.” However, an official source at the Saudi Foreign Ministry denied the news.

Earlier this week, Israeli blogger Ben Tzion claimed he had made secret visits to holy Muslim sites in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Lebanon, and Jordan. He reportedly holds a Russian passport.

He posted photos of himself inside the al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina, Saudi Arabia, in which he can be seen pointing to his name written in Hebrew.

Observers say the increasingly public but informal contact between Israeli and Saudi officials, such as the synagogue visit, are attempts to test the waters before Riyadh and Tel Aviv potentially declare open relations.

Trump briefs Erdogan on ‘pending adjustments’ to military support for US-backed forces in Syria
The US and Turkey have discussed “pending adjustments” to military support for Washington’s “partners” on the ground in Syria, and have agreed to join forces against “all forms” of terrorism, including the Kurdish PKK and Fetullah Gulen’s movement.
Trends
Syria war, Syria-Turkey

Washington and Ankara reaffirmed commitments to jointly fight not only Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), but “all terrorists organizations,” including the Kurdish PKK and Fetullah Gulen’s movement, the Turkish presidency said following Recep Erdogan’s phone conversation with Donald Trump Friday. The two leaders also "discussed recent developments in Syria, bilateral ties and a summit in Russia's Sochi,” where President Vladimir Putin hosted Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier this week, the statement added.

Earlier, Turkey's foreign minister announced that Washington has also allegedly agreed to stop arming the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia that serves as the backbone for the US-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

The White House, however, did not explicitly mention the issue of arming YPG in its statement following the phone conversation, but did say that Trump and Erdogan discussed “pending adjustments” to Washington’s military support for US-led forces on the ground in Syria. It also confirmed the two leaders “discussed combating terrorism in all its forms,” and to foster “regional stability.”

“President Trump also informed President Erdogan of pending adjustments to the military support provided to our partners on the ground in Syria, now that the battle of Raqqa is complete and we are progressing into a stabilization phase to ensure that ISIS cannot return. The leaders also discussed the purchase of military equipment from the United States,” the White House said.

Trump is determined about “bringing peace to the mess that I inherited in the Middle East,” he tweeted before the phone call. With such a heavy burden, the US president then told his Twitter followers that he is heading off “to play golf (quickly) with Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson.”

Turkey has long argued that the US must stop funding and arming the Kurdish Units in Syria, emphasizing that YPG is a terrorist organization affiliated with its own homegrown Kurdish insurgent group, the Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK).

“Our discomfort regarding the provision of weapons to the YPG was conveyed to Mr Trump once again... Trump very clearly said he had given instructions to not provide weapons to the YPG,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said in Ankara. “We welcome the promise of not providing weapons to the YPG, and want to see it implemented practically.”

Trump's conversation with his Turkish counterpart comes two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted the leaders of Iran and Turkey, trying to find a political solution to end the crisis in Syria, as the battle against terrorist groups enters its final stretch. Ankara and Tehran played crucial roles in negotiating the so-called “de-escalation zones” in Syria, and are actively involved in trying to attain a political settlement in the war-ravaged country.

“The presidents of Iran and Turkey supported the initiative to convene an all-Syrian forum-congress of the national dialogue in Syria. We agreed to hold this important event at the proper level and ensure the participation of representatives of different sectors of Syrian society,” Putin said after the talks in Sochi Wednesday.

Ahead of his engagement with Presidents Erdogan and Rouhani, Putin met with the Syrian President Bashar Assad Monday, as the Kremlin amplified its leading role in trying to negotiate a peace settlement in Syria. The future of Syria also dominated an hour-long phone call between the Russian and American presidents Tuesday.

In 2015, Russia sent its warplanes to help Damascus fight against terrorists and extremist Islamist forces trying to overthrow the Assad government. The operation prevented a collapse of the secular Syrian state, and paved the way for a political dialogue with opposition groups who see a future for Syria free from extremist ideology.

Civilians in Northern Syria Threaten SDF to Leave Region
TEHRAN (FNA)- People in the town of Manbij in Northern Aleppo took to the streets after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) started forced recruiting, dissident-affiliated websites reported on Saturday, adding that the people threatened the SDF to leave their town.

The websites reported that the Albu Bana tribe in a statement condemned the arrests of the youth and forced recruiting in the town of Manbij by the SDF.

The websites further said that the statement further gave a 24-hour-long ultimatum to the SDF to release the arrested people and announced that the tribe will not allow the SDF to arrest women in the region.

The statement added that if the arrested people are not freed before the ultimatum, the Albu Bana tribesmen will do whatever they can, including popular uprising or demonstration, to free them from the detention.

The Albu Bana tribesmen have also called on other tribes to stand stance over the anti-Arab policies of the SDF in the region.

The websites reported earlier this month that people in Manbij and several villages demonstrated against forced recruitment by the SDF in the region.

The shops and businesses in the region were also closed to oppose the SDF's move, the websites reported.

The websites further said that following the strikes, demonstrations and tensions in the region, the SDF threatened Manbij's resident that it would arrest women as recruits if men do not obey the forced recruitment rule approved by the Kurdish Forces Legislative Council.

‘US betrayal of Kurds an attempt to fix troubled relations with Turkey & failed Syria policy’
Syrian Kurdish militias will feel betrayed and will likely align closer with Damascus, if Donald Trump indeed delivers on his promise to Recep Tayyip Erdogan and “adjusts” US military support for the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces, experts have told RT.

In a phone call with his Turkish counterpart Friday, Trump briefed Erdogan on “pending adjustments for [US] military support provided to our partners on the ground in Syria.” Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, who was present during the call, said Trump explicitly promised to “not provide weapons to the YPG,” which Ankara considers a terrorist organization affiliated with the Turkish Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
But without support from Washington, Kurds are likely to seek closer ties with Damascus to resolve the Syria crisis and retain the country’s unity, investigative journalist, Rick Sterling told RT.

“What may happen, is that they may recognize and start working more closely with the Syrian government. Of course, they have never been fighting against the Syrian government forces. And I think what may happen here is that YPG will align and make it very clear that they are not seeking a federation or anything like that but they will be part of a future Syria,” Sterling said.

Trump’s intention to backtrack on his support for the Kurds, experts believe, is part of an attempt to “adjust” failing US policy on Syria, following a number of recent diplomatic markers, achieved with Russia’s direct and dynamic input. Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Syrian leader Bashar Assad in Sochi. He later convened a summit on the future of Syria with the leaders of Iran and Turkey, where all parties endorsed an initiative to convene an all-Syrian national dialogue. The developments in Syria were also discussed between Putin and Trump Tuesday, during a more than an hour-long phone conversation.

“What is happening in Syria involves basically a failure of US foreign policy. What I mean is that Washington had allied with the Saudis regarding backing religious zealots. However, with the intervention of Russia, and Iran, and Hezbollah of Lebanon, these forces defeated the so-called Islamic State, defeated the religious zealots and therefore US policy is now scrambling to try to find an alternative to that failed policy,” historian Gerald Horne explained.

“The timing [of Trump-Erdogan phone call] is being driven by Russia’s role in seeking a solution and really making a lot of progress in resolving the conflict, bringing different parties together to the table,” Sterling pointed out.

Sterling warned that some forces in Washington do not want peace to prevail in Syria. Furthermore, there is a chance that Washington might ally itself with Ankara's troops in Syria, who are officially on the ground there to monitor the Idlib de-escalation zone, one of four established by Moscow, Ankara, and Tehran earlier this year. Erdogan, however, made little secret of the fact that Turkish forces might challenge the Kurdish stronghold of Afrin in northern Syria.

“There has been a lot of Turkish troops going into Northern Syria, so it may be that Washington will align more closely with Turkish troops which will refuse to leave Syria,” Sterling said. “I think what is going on in Washington is that there is uncertainty how to handle the situation. There are forces in Washington that want to play a spoiler in this [achieving peace]. They don’t want to see a resolution to the conflict, and that is what is dangerous.”
Washington’s decision to back away from the YPG, which has been the core of the US-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), is nothing less of a “betrayal,” experts told RT.

“The Kurds have been betrayed many times in the past,” Sterling said. “They will not be surprised by this. And they have probably been making plans for some time that their patron, the United States, will abandon them.”

“The Kurds are in a corner” following the Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum in September, which regional powers and the US failed to recognize, Horne said. “If the Kurds are getting a raw deal, this will not be the first time they have been traduced at the hands of Washington,” he added. He noted that following the Erdogan-Trump call, the “Kurds are really over a barrel.”

Map of Syrian Civil War

ネタニヤフは、“The residents of the neighboring countries will cooperate with us because otherwise they will have to cooperate with foreign slavers,”と述べています。

Israel ‘covertly’ cooperates with Arab states, Netanyahu says
Israel is covertly cooperating with some Arab nations, the Israeli PM has revealed, expressing hope that this practice will expand. Benjamin Netanyahu’s revelation comes after IDF chief of staff said recently that Tel Aviv is ready to share intelligence on Iran with Saudi Arabia.

"Fruitful cooperation with Arab countries is usually covert,” Netanyahu said at a memorial event for Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion Thursday. Those ties are “carried out constantly under cover of secrecy,” he emphasized.

“I believe that these relations (with Arab states) will continue to develop and I believe that they will bear fruit for the expansion of the peace orbit,” the PM said. “The residents of the neighboring countries will cooperate with us because otherwise they will have to cooperate with foreign slavers,” he said as cited by the Ynet website.

Israel has been pursuing rapprochement with the Gulf monarchies and other Muslim nations in the region, citing common interests and threats, with Iran their top target. Israel currently has diplomatic relations only with Egypt and Jordan, while the rest of the Arab world maintains that any relations are possible only after the Israelis withdraw from the Palestinian territories captured in the Six-Day War of 1967.

Last week, Israeli Energy Minister, Yuval Steinitz, also confirmed Tel Aviv’s clandestine contacts with the Arab world. "We have ties that are indeed partly covert with many Muslim and Arab countries, and usually (we are) the party that is not ashamed,” the minister told Army Radio.

“It's the other side that is interested in keeping the ties quiet. With us, usually, there is no problem, but we respect the other side's wish, when ties are developing, whether it's with Saudi Arabia or with other Arab countries or other Muslim countries, and there is much more ... (but) we keep it secret,” Steinitz said.

Earlier in November, IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Gadi Eizenkot, told Saudi Arabia's Alaf newspaper that his country was ready to share “intelligence information” with Riyadh on Tehran.

US pumping weapons into Asia-Pacific using N. Korea as excuse, Russia tells Japan
Washington is militarizing the Asia-Pacific, “pumping” weapons and kit into Japan and South Korea in an “absolutely disproportionate” response to the North Korean threat, the Russian Foreign Minister said. Tokyo won’t be calling the shots, he warned.

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, was speaking to reporters after hosting his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, on Friday in Moscow. The top diplomat said Moscow deems unacceptable “attempts to pump armaments and military equipment into the [Asian] region, and to militarize it citing the North Korean nuclear threat.”

“We believe measures taken by the US and its allies in the region are absolutely disproportionate to what is required,” Lavrov added. Russia has voiced deep concern over the fact that “either Japan or South Korea is becoming a territory hosting the US global missile defense system being deployed in the region under the guise of [responding to] North Korean threat.”

He said that a similar American ballistic missile shield is being deployed in Europe, with Washington claiming it is to protect the continent from Iran’s missiles. “If you look at the map,” Lavrov stated, “you will see this US missile defense system is miraculously surrounding Russia and China.”

Disagreeing with a remark by Foreign Minister Kono, who said the US-built missile defense shield will not damage Russia-Japan ties, Lavrov said: “As we know the Americans, we quite seriously doubt they would agree to hand control over some element of this global missile defense system to someone else.”

He reiterated that Aegis Ashore system – parts of which recently went online in Romania, with more under construction in Poland – can also be equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles – the kind of weapon whose land-based variants are prohibited under the 1987 US-Russia Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

Moscow does not welcome Pyongyang’s “missile and nuclear ventures that blatantly violate a UN Security Council resolution”, Lavrov told his Japanese counterpart. In the meantime, Russia as well as China “insist that other parts of the resolution, particularly the ones that call for revival of talks [with North Korea], should also be implemented.”

The meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Korean peninsula. Over the past months, Washington has been signaling that it was considering military actions against North Korea, but stopped short of delivering verbal threats. However, the US and its regional allies Japan and South Korea stepped up military exercises involving long-range bombers, carrier strike groups and amphibious forces.

In November, three US carrier strike groups held tri-carrier, multinational drills off the Korean coast in the latest show of force in the region. The USS ‘Ronald Reagan’, USS ‘Nimitz’ and USS ‘Theodore Roosevelt’ were joined by Japan’s ‘Ise’, ‘Inazuma’ and ‘Makinami’ warships, as well as close to a dozen South Korean ships. North Korea furiously condemned the maneuvers, which also involved US B-1 strategic bombers.

Next month, the US and South Korea’s militaries will be carrying out Vigilant Ace wargames, featuring six F-22 Raptor and four F-35A Lightning American stealth jets, as well as thousands of troops.

Russia opposes militarization of Asia over North Korea: Lavrov

Russia is opposed to the militarization of Asia under the pretext of countering perceived threats from North Korea, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Lavov expressed Moscow’s concern about the matter in a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, in Moscow on Friday.

He said the United States was not satisfied that Pyongyang had ceased its missile tests and was taking provocative measures to irritate Pyongyang.

He said Russia was worried that Japan was becoming a regional military base for its ally Washington, allowing the US military to strengthen its presence in the region.

Lavrov said US plans to deploy Tomahawk missiles in Japan would be a violation of US-Russia arms agreements.

The US and some of its regional allies are involved in a heated dispute with North Korea over Pyongyang’s weapons programs.

Russia had said on Thursday that Washington’s provocations aimed at Pyongyang were escalating the crisis into a global “catastrophe.”

In his meeting with Lavrov, Kono avoided the topic of North Korea, instead talking about a Pacific island dispute between Japan and Russia.

The two countries are at odds over territory in the Pacific Ocean, known as the Kurile Islands in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan.

He said he had asked his Russian counterpart to make efforts to lift travel restrictions to the islands.

Lavrov had said earlier that progress had been made on confidence-building measures related to the dispute.

Moscow brands US presence in Syria as ‘close to occupation’

Moscow brands US presence in Syria as ‘close to occupation’
Russia has criticized Washington’s disregard for international law following a report that US troops will remain in Syria after the defeat of ISIS in order to prop up local Kurdish forces and put pressure on Damascus.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that there were no legal grounds for the US to have a military presence in Syria. “They are there not only without permission from Damascus, but also in direct violation of the wishes of the Syrian government. In fact, what they are doing could be described as occupation,” the official added.

Zakharova’s remarks came in response to an article published in Washington Post on Wednesday, which quoted anonymous US officials who said the goals of the Trump administration in Syria had shifted from defeating terrorists to influencing Syrian politics.

“US Defense Secretary [James Mattis] openly said on November 13 that the American troops will not leave Syria until progress is made with a political resolution. The conditions of which, we presume, the US wants to dictate arbitrarily,” Zakrarova said. “We have noted on numerous occasions that such statements cast a serious doubt about what the true goals of the US-led coalition are in Syria.”

Previously, Washington justified its Syrian deployment based on the need to fight terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). However, with the jihadists now in retreat, US officials have been changing the narrative, trying to explain why their military force remains in a sovereign nation, into which they were never invited.

Men found on boat in northeast Japan say they came from N. Korea
A boat carrying eight men claiming to be fishermen from North Korea has washed ashore in the northeastern Japan prefecture of Akita, police said Friday.

The police received a call from a resident in the city of Yurihonjo around 11:30 p.m. Thursday about suspicious men at the seaside. They later found the men on the wooden boat at a nearby marina.

The men had no life-threatening injuries and appeared to speak Korean, the police said. They have been taken into protective custody.

Hachiro Okonogi, chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, told reporters after a Cabinet meeting that the men have said they were fishing before the boat broke down and washed ashore.

In November 2015 a wooden boat drifted ashore in the city of Noshiro in Akita and skeletal remains of two men were found inside the vessel and nearby.

FARSNEWS2017/11/23
Report: Saudi Arabia Uses US Mercenaries to Torture Arrested Princes, Businessmen
TEHRAN (FNA)- A report revealed Saudi Arabia has been using US mercenaries to torture Saudi princes and billionaires who have recently been arrested in the biggest purge of the country’s elite in the kingdom’s modern history.

The arrested Saudi princes and billionaire businessmen are being strung up by their feet and beaten by American private security contractors, a source in the kingdom said, Daily Mail reproted.

“DailyMail.com can disclose that the arrests have been followed by ‘interrogations’ which a source said were being carried out by ‘American mercenaries’ brought in to work for the 32-year-old crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who is now the kingdom’s most powerful figure,” the report said.

“They are beating them, torturing them, slapping them, insulting them. They want to break them down,” the source said.

The mercenaries are provided by the notorious former American military service contractor “Blackwater” which has changed its name to “Academi,” the report said.

Blackwater changed its name in 2009 after a group of its employees were convicted of committing torture, random killing and abuse of people in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Both Academi and its parent company Constellis have denied any involvement in Saudi Arabia and said they do not engage in torture, a practice which is illegal for any US citizen in any part of the world.

On November 4, dozens of Saudi princes, ministers, and former ministers were detained on the orders of Saudi Arabia’s so-called Anti-Corruption Committee headed by the crown prince.

Former spy chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan as well as billionaire prince and the king’s nephew Waleed bin Talal are among the notable businessmen and royals incarcerated.

According to the source, Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS) has also confiscated over $194 billion from the bank accounts and seized assets of those arrested.

DailyMail.com’s source said MBS initially invited bin Talal to a meeting at his Al Yamamah palace, then sent officers to arrest him the night before the meeting.

“Suddenly at 2.45am all his guards were disarmed, the royal guards of MBS storm in,” said the source. “He was dragged from his own bedroom in his pajamas, handcuffed, put in the back of an SUV, and interrogated like a criminal.”

“All the guards in charge are private security because MBS does not want Saudi officers there who have been saluting those detainees all their lives,” said the source. “Outside the hotels where they are being detained you see the armored vehicles of the Saudi special forces. But inside, it’s a private security company.”

“They have transferred all the guys from Abu Dhabi. Now they are in charge of everything,” said the source.

The source noted that even Mohammed Bin Salman himself conducts some of the interrogations as he is desperate to assert his authority through fear and seeks to uncover an alleged network of foreign officials who have taken bribes from Saudi princes.

“When it is something big he asks them questions,” the source said. “He speaks to them very nicely in the interrogation, and then he leaves the room, and the mercenaries go in. The prisoners are slapped, insulted, hung up, tortured.”

Blackwater’s name had previously been mentioned by Lebanese President Michel Aoun following the purge. He tweeted that Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, a Saudi-Lebanese citizen, was being detained in Riyadh by Blackwater guards, but he later deleted the tweet.

“Lebanese authorities have unconfirmed information that the Blackwater firm is guarding Hariri and his family, not official Saudi security forces,” Aoun had tweeted on November 15.

A high-profile Saudi whistleblower twitter account, @Ahdjadid also said King Salman has brought in at least 150 Blackwater guards.

“The first group of Blackwater mercenaries arrived in Saudi Arabia a week after the toppling of bin Nayef, Salman’s predecessor as crown prince,” the whistleblower tweeted. “They were around 150 people. Bin Salman sent some of them to secure bin Nayef’s place of detention and the rest he used for his own protection.”

Last week, the New York Times reported that Egypt’s former security chief during the Mubarak-era Habib el-Adly, who is notorious for his track record of brutality and use of torture, is reportedly serving as an advisor to Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia’s ailing 81-year-old monarch has been reportedly suffering from partial dementia and is said to be contemplating an abdication in favor of his son.

Many political observers interpret the entire crackdown as a purge against dissent before the crown prince’s rise to power.
