‘Unexpected’ source of radioactivity from Fukushima disaster found – study
Six years on, consequences of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant continue to uncover. Scientists say they’ve found new and “unexpected” source of radioactive material dozens of kilometers away from the site.

New radioactivity has been discovered in salty groundwater and sands beneath beaches up to 100km away from the disaster site, according to the findings published in ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ journal on Monday.

Researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the US and Japan’s Kanazawa University revealed high levels of persistent cesium-137 in eight beaches, sampled for the study between 2013 and 2016.

These levels turned out to be up to 10 times higher than levels in seawater of the power plant harbor, according to the press release on the WHOI website.

“No one expected that the highest levels of cesium in ocean water today would be found not in the harbor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, but in the groundwater many miles away below the beach sands,” one of the researchers, Virginie Sanial, said.

The radioactive element the scientists suggest traveled from the crippled plant with ocean currents days and weeks after the reactor meltdowns. The sand grains have been storing it for years, slowly emitting cesium into ocean.

The radioactive content could be originating from the 2011 disaster or nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s-60s. However, the research team also found another form of cesium which can only be Fukushima-derived.

“Only time will slowly remove the cesium from the sands as it naturally decays away and is washed out by seawater,” Sanial said.

Despite the study showing that cesium doesn’t pose a risk to public health, the research still warns of such unsuspected pathway and storage of contamination, which should be considered in nuclear power plant monitoring.

“There are 440 operational nuclear reactors in the world, with approximately one-half situated along the coastline,” the study reads.

In March 2016, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan, triggering a tsunami that caused meltdowns at three reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

The disaster forced some 160,000 people to flee their homes and left more than 18,000 dead, becoming the worst since the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe.

Serbia takes delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets from Russia
The first two of six Russian MiG-29 fighter jets being provided free to Serbia have been delivered, reports local daily Bilc. The remaining warplanes are due to arrive by the end of the week.
“We are proud to say that our aviation is obtaining new equipment for the first time since 1987. We are glad to make our military more powerful, well-organized and up-to-date,” said the Serbian Labor Minister Aleksandar Vulin, as quoted by the media.

The Russian fighter jets are seen as a significant contribution to Serbia’s defense, according to the commander of the air force General Ranko Zivak.

Russia is handing over six MiGs for free which Serbia will then upgrade. The market price of the fighter jets is €600 million. Belgrade is going to spend up to €230 million to modernize them.

Earlier this year, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the country needed Russian weapons to ensure its security.

Serbia is also planning to improve its anti-aircraft defense. According to Vucic, Belgrade is negotiating with Moscow to purchase the Russian-made S-300 missile systems.

“We will continue to protect our freedom and independence,” the president said.

Moscow also gave Serbia 30 battle tanks and 30 armored vehicles, which will be reportedly delivered soon.

Serbia's neighbor, NATO-member Croatia, is reportedly shopping for a new fighter jet to replace Soviet-made MiG-21s. The leading contenders are reportedly Swedish Saab's JAS-39 Gripen and the Israeli version of American Lockheed Martin's F-16.

Serbia has resisted NATO's eastward expansion. All of the nations in the Balkans have faced demands to join the anti-Russian campaign, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in June after Montenegro joined NATO.

North Korea vowed to make “nuclear clouds” over Japan, which had called for more pressure on Pyongyang

Nuclear clouds & flames: More sabre-rattling from N. Korea, threatening ‘suicidal’ Japan
North Korea vowed to make “nuclear clouds” over Japan, which had called for more pressure on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programs. It has also said that in case of a nuclear war, Japan will be immediately “engulfed in flames.”

The North described the behavior of the Japanese authorities, in asking the international community to exert "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang, as “little short of mad,” North Korean state media, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), stated on Monday. The agency also accused Tokyo, and its ally Washington, of “straining the situation on the peninsula” by countering the actions of the communist state.

“Inciting tensions on the Korean peninsula is a suicidal deed that will bring nuclear clouds to the Japanese archipelago,” KCNA said in its article.

The agency also warned that if it comes to a nuclear war, “the Japanese archipelago will be engulfed in flames in a moment,” adding that it is “self-evident.”

Earlier the communist North vowed to “sink” Japan, which is “no longer needed to exist near us,” according to KCNA.

In September, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said “not dialogue, but pressure” is necessary “to make North Korea abandon all nuclear and ballistic missile programs” in an address to the United Nations General Assembly.

The US, one of the key Japan’s allies in the region, is dismissive of the opportunity for talks with North Korea. On Monday, the White House said that “it is not the time to talk” as it does not support any conversations except those on the fate of the Americans who have been detained by the North.

Despite the US secretary of state’s earlier statement that Washington is “probing” Pyongyang to see if it is interested in dialogue and has “lines of communications” with it, US President Donald Trump apparently does not share the approach.

“He [Tillerson] is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” the president tweeted on Sunday. “Save your energy Rex, we'll do what has to be done!” another post added.

The US and North Korea have recently been embroiled in a war of words, threatening each other with military action, while Russia and China have been calling for a peaceful solution to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula. A ‘double-freeze’ plan to suspend military activities was designed by Moscow and Beijing, but has been rejected by Washington.

FC Barcelona plays in empty stadium as defiant Catalans go to polls despite crackdown

More than 20 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a mass shooting during an open-air music festival in Las Vegas, near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Sunday night.

-ISIS claims Las Vegas shooter converted to Islam a few months prior to attack
The shooter, who killed 50 people and injured hundreds, converted to Islam “few months ago” and conducted the attack on behalf of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), Reuters reports, citing terrorist group’s web site.
Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the mass shooting in Las Vegas, believed to be the deadliest in modern US history.
“The Las Vegas attack was carried out by a soldier of the Islamic State and he carried it out in response to calls to target states of the coalition,” Reuters cited the Amaq, IS-affiliated website. “The Las Vegas attacker converted to Islam a few months ago.”
