Kurdish Sources Blame Russia, Syria for Airstrike on SDF

Deir Ezzur: Kurdish Sources Blame Russia, Syria for Airstrike on SDF
TEHRAN (FNA)- A Kurdish media outlet claimed that the Syrian and Russian fighter jets targeted positions of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzur province in early hours of Saturday.

The Kurdish-language Hawar news agency reported that the Russian and Syrian fighter jets hit SDF's positons in al-Sina'ah region in the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Early Saturday, injuring a number of the Kurdish fighters.

Hawar news said that six SDF fighters were injured in the air raid, adding that Damascus and Moscow have not thus far reacted to the allegation.

The US-backed SDF forces in Syria announced that they will not allow the Syrian government troops to cross the Euphrates River.

"Now we have 3 km between us and the Eastern riverbank, once our forces reach the area, any shot fired into that area will be considered an attack on the military council,” Abu Khawla, commander of the SDF-affiliated Deir Ezzur Military Council, said.

"We have notified Damascus and Moscow that we are coming to the Euphrates riverbank, and they can see our forces advancing. We do not allow the Syrian pro-government forces to cross to the Eastern riverbank,” he added.

Moscow also said Syrian government forces have crossed the Euphrates River in their push to liberate the Deir Ezzur Province from ISIL, ignoring a warning by a ragtag group of militants that receives Washington backing.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added on Friday that the Syrian army was already on the river’s Eastern side.

The Syrian army crossed the Euphrates to deploy on the Eastern bank of the river this week.

Syria's al-Watan newspaper reported on Tuesday that the first units of the army deployed on the Eastern bank of the river, spreading towards the regions where a number of SDF claimed to have deployed a day earlier.

The Arabic-language daily also stressed that the Syrian soldiers were waiting for portable bridges to move their armored units across the river.

The SDF claimed on Monday that a number of its units have advanced over 250 square kilometers in their anti-ISIL operations dubbed as 'Island's Storm', and are approaching the contact line with the Syrian army.

The SDF opened a new front in Eastern Syria earlier in September and moved towards Deir Ezzur from the North.

The spokesman for international coalition Ryan Dilon reported that since the beginning of the Island's Storm military operations, the SDF has captured more than 250 square kilometers in Wadi Nahr Khabour region in Northeastern Deir Ezzur.

Meanwhile, the SDF media center announced that combat units have entered the streets al-Sina'ah (industrial0 region in Deir Ezzur city's outskirts.

Al-Sina'ah industrial region is only 10 kilometers from Deir Ezzur city, meaning that the SDF are now just 10 kilometers away from Syrian troops and their allies if their claims are proved.

Starve cancer of energy with natural molecule, study advises

Cancer’s energy source can be thwarted by a naturally-occurring molecule which stops affected cells from consuming sugar, according to a new study.

Koningic acid (KA) was found to disrupt the metabolism of cancerous cells.

Published in Cell Metabolism the team from Duke Cancer Institute in North Carolina first set out to study the ‘Warburg effect,’ a known but little understood process in which cancer cells modify their metabolism to consume glucose for energy production.

The team compared stages of the Warburg effect to that of normal cell activity. An enzyme known as Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) was found to control the rate of glucose processing in cancer cells.

Researchers tested koningic against GAPDH and discovered how to successfully curb its glucose consumption in mouse models. Normal cells were not affected by the introduction of the molecule.

The Warburg effect has varying levels of influence in cancers, even being absent in some cases. A model to measure the GAPDH enzyme’s effect was developed, allowing the team to know when the introduction of KA is a sufficient treatment.

“We’ve seen with genetics that cancers can be targeted based on whether certain mutations are present, and it could be that selectively targeting tumors based on their metabolism could have a similar impact,” the study’s lead author, Maria Liberti, said in a press release.

Further study of their findings is needed, according to the researchers, who say their discovery needs to be reproduced in more animal studies. Other molecules may also be able to produce the same results as koningic acid, they said.

米国がまたアサド退陣を言い出した シリアの安定化を妨害

RT2017/9/15
The US will not be satisfied as long as Syrian President Bashar Assad is in power, US Ambassador to the UN said, commenting on a major de-escalation effort brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey without American participation.

Russia, Turkey and Iran agreed Friday on the fourth, final, de-escalation zone in Syria, which is designed to ensure ceasefire between Syrian government forces and rebels for a period of six months in order to pave the way for a political resolution to the six-year war. The deal, which is also aimed at separating terrorist groups, including Islamic State terrorists (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL or Daesh) and Jabhat al-Nusra (Al-Nusra Front) from so-called moderate opposition, was agreed with the approval of the Syrian government, as well as members of Syrian opposition who participated in the talks.

This came ten days after the Syrian army with Russia’s help liberated one of Islamic State’s last strongholds in Syria, the city of Deir ez-Zor, which had been under the terrorists’ siege for three years. The lifting of the siege finally allowed humanitarian aid to reach the city.

“We’re not going to be satisfied until we see a strong and stable Syria. And that is not with Assad in place,” US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said at a White House briefing on Friday, when asked whether the US was left behind in international efforts to resolve Syrian crisis.

American officials have said their main goal in Syria is to fight ISIS, as Washington backs the operations of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which includes Kurdish fighters as well as Arab militia groups.

The SDF advanced towards Deir ez-Zor from the eastern side of the Euphrates river this week, in an effort to gain control of the city’s eastern outskirts before the government does.

While Deir ez-Zor city was not an SDF target, the US-backed militias did not rule out the possibility that it may become one, saying people in the city wanted to be liberated from “the regime and Daesh at the same time,” AP cited Abu Khawla, leader of the group advancing towards the newly liberated city.

On Thursday, the US-led coalition said the SDF was not planning to enter Deir ez-Zor city.

Abu Khawla told AP that the militia will not let Syrian government forces and their allies cross the Euphrates river to gain control of its eastern side.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Friday the Syrian army had already crossed.

“After a major victory near Deir al-Zor, the Syrian government army continues to clear Islamic State terrorists from the eastern regions of the country,” according to Zakharova.

“The suburbs of this provincial centre have been liberated. Advance units have successfully crossed the Euphrates and are holding positions on its eastern bank,” she added, without specifying the location.

On September 12, the Russian military said that the Syrian army had regained control of 85 percent of the country’s territory.

The first UN humanitarian convoy arrived in Deir ez-Zor on Friday. Russia began delivery of aid to the embattled city last week, almost immediately after the siege was lifted.

“We fed our children with stale bread, cleaning the mold from it. We have long suffered from artillery strikes and shells; they usually hit civilians – children and women in particular,” a local woman told RT, as residents described the horrors of life under siege.
