Sources Disclose S. Arabia's Pressure on Iraq to Give Up Support for Qatar

FARSNEWS2017/7/10
Sources Disclose S. Arabia's Pressure on Iraq to Give Up Support for Qatar
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iraqi sources revealed that Riyadh is exerting pressure on Haider al-Abadi's government for its support for Qatar during the crisis created for the tiny Persian Gulf country by Saudi Arabia and its allies.

The Arabic-language al-Taqrir al-Iraqi news website quoted Jassim al-Bayati, one of the leaders of Iraq's al-Da'wah party, as saying that since the crisis started in the relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, increasing pressure has been exerted on his country to unite with Riyadh against Doha.

He added that the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has postponed his visit to Saudi Arabia following the aforementioned pressures.

His remarks came as al-Abadi underlined in June that Iraq is opposed to the isolation of Qatar by Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf Arab neighbors because it hurts ordinary citizens.

"Regimes are not affected by the blockade; the blockade hurts people," he told reporters in Baghdad.

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar early June, and suspended air and sea communication one week after the Arab Islamic American Summit in Riyadh, accusing Doha of supporting terrorist organizations and destabilizing the situation in the Middle East.

UN, ICC Have Reasonable Basis for US War Crimes in Syria

FARSNEWS2017/7/10
UN, ICC Have Reasonable Basis for US War Crimes in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- A former French judge has been appointed as the head of an independent team tasked with investigating war crimes in Syria.

Catherine Marchi-Uhel was appointed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to lead a panel known as the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism which aims to gather, preserve, and analyze potential evidence of serious violations of international law committed in Syria since 2011 for use by courts or an international tribunal. The legal team, established in Geneva, was created by the UN General Assembly in December 2015.

Many have applauded the move, including Human Rights Watch who noted that the team is “critical for the long march to justice,” stating: “For victims who have known nothing but suffering, despair, and abandonment, the creation of this team represents a small step in the difficult struggle for justice, redress and an end to impunity that has marked the bloody conflict.”

Though the exact figure is uncertain, estimates of casualties from the 7-year long war range from 320,000 to over 400,000. A UN International Commission of Inquiry has comprehensively documented atrocities committed by all parties to the conflict, including systematic attacks on hospitals and schools. Several countries have already begun their own investigations into war crimes in Syria including Sweden which prosecuted a former Syrian opposition fighter for war crimes in December 2016. But that’s just not enough. What about the United States, its coalition members and their terrorist proxy forces?

It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the American armed forces and their terrorist allies have committed war crimes by dropping bombs, killing innocent civilians and torturing detainees in Syria. This raises the possibility that American forces and American officials could be indicted even though Washington has not joined the global court. They have subjected an entire nation to murder, forced displacement, rape, cruel treatment, hunger, siege and outrages upon personal dignity on the territory of Syria since 2011.

The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism, therefore, can and should seek authorization to open a full-scale investigation in Syria that could lead to war crimes charges against the Americans – with no strings attached and certainly no politicization of the process. This is important, because Elizabeth Trudeau, the spokeswoman for the State Department, says the US does not believe an ICC investigation is “warranted or appropriate”. She also claims that “the US is deeply committed to complying with the law of war, and we have a robust national system of investigation and accountability that more than meets international standards.” This is rubbish.

Not even one person in the US has ever been charged, or will ever be charged, with committing war crimes in Syria. That’s something that will never happen, just as it won’t at the International Criminal Court because the US has not signed up. However, even though the US is not a member of the court, Americans who are not prosecuted at home could still face prosecution at the ICC headquarters in The Hague because they have committed, and continue to commit, war crimes within its jurisdiction in Syria which is a member.

Investigations also are reportedly under way in Poland, Romania and Lithuania, which are all signatories to the Rome statute. That means, they can also look into crimes at secret CIA detention facilities in those countries. The abuse charges are there in a wide-ranging annual report into the prosecution office’s preliminary examinations, which involve studying reports of possible crimes to establish if they fall under the court’s jurisdiction. The US forces have also used torture and committed other atrocities in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pentagon regime and its terror affiliates have killed tens of thousands of people and are suspected of committing war crimes including murder, and attacking civilians, hospitals, schools, markets, and humanitarian workers.

Prosecutors at the ICC have already concluded that American soldiers and intelligence officers have committed war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is no reason to think they have not committed similar crimes in Syria. This brings us to the subject and another report at hand:

Massive civilian death toll from US bombing in Mosul. The Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights says nearly 700 civilians have been killed by US-led air strikes or ISIL actions in Mosul. The Pentagon regime says it will investigate. It is doubtful that any Pentagon official or military commander will ever be held to account.

As long as the ICC prosecutors allow this immoral pattern to continue, the United States and its lackeys will continue to act out and get away with murder. They will never launch a single investigation into civilian casualties. They will never put their feet down, nor will they ever make their forces face the international consequences of their war crimes.

Human Rights Watch and others describe these measures as being illegal under the Geneva Conventions. Likewise, the ICC says these war crimes can be prosecuted in the United States through the War Crimes Act of 1996. Now that the US government does not accept the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over its nationals, the ICC should step in and prosecute.

Thousands Protest Japan’s New Anti-Terror Law, Demand Abe Govt Resignation
TEHRAN (FNA)- Protesters opposed to new anti-terror legislation took to the streets of Tokyo in their thousands to voice anger at the law.

A crowd, which according to a local report was 8,000 strong, gathered in Shinjuku Central Park to denounce the controversial new anti-terrorism measure that was passed in Japan last month, RT reported.

On June 15, the so-called ‘Anti-Conspiracy Bill’ was enacted by the Japanese government which, it said, was aimed at combating organized crime and terrorism.

The new measure authorizes added powers for officers to monitor and arrest “organized criminal groups” that have knowledge of, or plan, a criminal act in unison.

Video of Sunday’s protest, obtained by RT’s Ruptly agency, showed demonstrators displaying placards denouncing the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and demanding “truth.”

According to Asahi news, supporters of SEALDs, a student group which advocates for “liberal democracy,” were at also the protest in Shinjuku Central Park.

Abe’s new bill has been criticized for its use of vague language, giving rise to suggestions and fears that it could be used to crack down on civil liberties and legitimate protest.

Prior to the bill being passed, UN special rapporteur on the right to privacy, Joseph Cannataci expressed his concern about the law in a letter to the Japanese PM.

“Serious concern is expressed that the proposed bill, in its current form and in combination with other legislation, may affect the exercise of the right to privacy as well as other fundamental public freedoms given its potential broad application,” Cannataci wrote.

“In particular I am concerned by the risks of arbitrary application of this legislation given the vague definition of what would constitute the ‘planning’ and the ‘preparatory actions,’” he said.

An illustration of the trajectory of the missile and the territory it covered during flight is included in an addition to the letter.

FARSNEWS2017/6/18
Qatari Gov't Receives Iranian President's Message
(略)
Iran has rallied to Qatar’s aid, offering the Persian Gulf state the use of three of its ports to import supplies as its Arab neighbors seek to isolate the emirate.

Qatar’s foreign minister said Doha would be able to import all the goods it needed. He described the de facto blockade imposed on Qatar by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain as “collective punishment”.

“We have been isolated because we are successful and progressive. We are a platform for peace not terrorism,” Sheikh Mohammed told reporters.

Riyadh and its allies earlier this month announced their move to isolate Qatar, accusing the Persian Gulf state of supporting terrorist groups and being too close to Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional rival.

Turkey also threw its weight behind Doha, fast-tracking plans to deploy extra Turkish troops to Qatar, potentially putting Ankara on a collision course with Riyadh.

Qatar, which hosts the US’s main military base in the Middle East, admits that it supports Islamist groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, the Palestinian faction. But it denies it backs terrorism.

The small nation imports virtually all its goods, but Sheikh Mohammed(カタール外相) said that only 16 per cent of food supplies come into Qatar via the countries that have imposed the de facto blockade.

It’s replaceable and has been replaced in one day,” he said. “They [Qataris] can survive at the same standard forever,” he said.

But he decried the humanitarian cost of Qatar’s neighbors’ actions, which has meant that Saudis, Emiratis and Bahrainis have to leave Qatar in two weeks. Qataris also have the same amount of time to leave those nations.

Qatar will not negotiate with Arab states until economic boycott ends – FM
Qatar says it will not negotiate with Arab states which cut diplomatic and travel ties with it earlier this month unless they reverse their measures, the country's foreign minister said.

"Qatar is under blockade, there is no negotiation. They have to lift the blockade to start negotiations," Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told reporters in Doha, as quoted by Reuters. "Until now we didn't see any progress about lifting the blockade, which is the precondition for anything to move forward."

He went on to state that Qatar "cannot just have (vague) demands such as 'the Qataris know what we want from them, they have to stop this or that, they have to be monitored by a foreign monitoring mechanism."

He said that matters which relate to the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council are subject to negotiation, referring to the body comprising Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.

"Anything not related to them is not subject to negotiation. No one has the right to interfere in my affairs. Al Jazeera is Qatar's affairs, Qatari foreign policy on regional issues is Qatar's affairs. And we are not going to negotiate on our own affairs," he said.

The reference to Qatar-based Al Jazeera comes after Gulf critics accused the news network of being a platform for extremists – an accusation which the channel has denied.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, the Maldives, and one of Libya's three rival governments severed ties with Qatar earlier this month, over its alleged support of terrorism. Doha has adamantly denied those claims.

Al-Thani called the move a "publicity stunt" on Monday, saying “it is unfortunate that our neighbors have chosen to invest their time and resources in a baseless propaganda campaign.”

Meanwhile, the UAE's minister of state for foreign affairs said on Monday that Arab powers plan to reveal their demands for Qatar in the coming days, and warned that sanctions imposed against Doha could last for years unless those demands are met.

"Qatar will realize that this is a new state of affairs and isolation can last years," Anwar Gargash told reporters in Paris, as quoted by Reuters.

"If they want to be isolated because of their perverted view of what their political role is, then let them be isolated. They are still in a phase of denial and anger," he said.

US President Donald Trump has supported Arab states' sanctions against Qatar, which have disrupted its main routes to import goods by land from Saudi Arabia and by sea from the UAE.

However, Qatar was able to find alternative routes in order to maintain business as usual, and al-Thani says Doha has an alternative plan in case the boycott continues.

"We have a back-up plan which depends mainly on Turkey, Kuwait and Oman," he said. "Iran has facilitated for us the sky passages for our aviation and we are cooperating with all countries that can ensure supplies for Qatar."

Qatar blames news agency hack on ‘neighbors’ who lead economic blockade
The hacking of Qatari state news agency QNA last month was carried out by the same “neighboring countries,” which then used the resulting diplomatic fallout as a pretext to impose an economic and political blockade on Doha, the country’s Attorney General has said.

It is “very clear” that the May 23 hacking attack on QNA originated from countries involved in the subsequent economic and political rift with Qatar, Attorney General Ali bin Fetais al-Marri told reporters on Tuesday, as cited by AFP.

“We have evidence to show that iPhones originating from the countries laying siege to us have been used in this hacking,” Marri said in Arabic, promising to make public a list of specific phone numbers “very soon.”

While refusing to elaborate on which specific countries were involved, Marri did say that more than one entity was behind the hack which allegedly emanated from “neighboring countries.”

“We have enough evidence to point the finger of blame at these countries,” Qatar’s Attorney General said, adding, that internet service providers of the alleged hackers were traced to countries that have since severed ties with Qatar.

“We have sent the information to the countries concerned and we are awaiting their response,” Marri added.

The ongoing Gulf diplomatic crisis was triggered by a May 23 report on the website of the Qatari news agency, which cited the country’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as criticizing Saudi Arabia’s anti-Iranian rhetoric. Qatar immediately claimed the agency’s website and its social media accounts had been hacked by unidentified attackers who then used the access to spread fake news reports.

These reports, Sheikh Tamim said, spoke favorably about the Lebanese organization Hezbollah and the Palestinian group Hamas while criticizing US President Donald Trump and saying he may not serve a full term.

In the wake of what Doha says were fake reports, over a dozen nations, led by Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, severed or downgraded diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar, accusing the Gulf kingdom of supporting terrorism.

Qatar has denied being a sponsor of terrorism and has defiantly accepted its economic fate, expressing a readiness to withstand the hardships “forever” as long as other countries do not dictate its domestic or foreign policy.

Doha has also launched its own investigation into the hack. The FBI and the UK’s National Crime Agency sent investigating teams to Doha to help with the Qatari probe.

The story was also treated with a familiar spin in the mainstream US media, after CNN, citing unnamed sources, claimed that Russian hackers were behind the QNA cyber intrusion. Moscow denied any involvement, saying that by spreading such unsubstantiated and unattributed reports, US media outlets undermine all their credibility and serve as an instrument of “mass misinformation.”

Iran supplies 1,000+ tons of food to Qatar every day – media
Iran is sending 1,100 tons of fruit and vegetables to Qatar on a daily basis as the country endures a blockade by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Egypt and other countries cut diplomatic ties and transportation links with Qatar early in June.

They accuse Doha of supporting terrorism and meddling in the internal affairs of other nations in the region. Doha has dismissed the claims.

The blockade led to fears of food shortages in a country that mainly depends on imports and saw people storming shops to secure supplies. The blockade was imposed in the midst of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, making the situation more acute for Qataris.

Some 1,100 tons of food products are being supplied to Qatar from Iran every day, local media reported Mohammad Mehdi Bonchari, the Director of ports in Iranian Bushehr province, as saying.

The Bushehr ports on the Persian Gulf coastline are located some 148 nautical miles from Qatar offering the fastest maritime supply route between the two countries.

Tehran began deliveries to Doha shortly after the blockade was imposed, with Iran Air, the national carrier, saying it flew five plane loads of vegetables to the country on June 11.

Around the same period, Iran's cattle exporting association said that 66 tons of beef were sent to Doha, announcing plans to supply another 90 tons shortly.

Last week, Abbas Maroufan, the deputy for domestic trade at the Iranian Government Trading Corporation, told the media that Iran could satisfy the food demands of “ten countries like Qatar.”

Reports of Iranian food supplies to Qatar are only coming from Tehran so far, with Qatari officials mum on the deliveries.

Qatar, which earlier praised the arrival of poultry and dairy products from Turkey, might be reluctant to acknowledge or reveal the help from Iran due to fears of further complications with Tehran’s archrival, Saudi Arabia.

Qatar to sue Arab state quartet for ‘siege’ damages, sets up new body to calculate losses
Doha is threatening to sue Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt for their ongoing blockade and has set up a special body to investigate claims and calculate the losses to the public and private sector as well as individuals.
The Compensation Claims Committee will study the degree of the economic damage suffered by Qatari nationals and business as a result of the ongoing diplomatic and economic blockade by the four Arab states.
“This committee will receive all claims, whether, from the public sector, private sector or individuals,” Attorney General Ali bin Fetais al-Marri announced Sunday in Doha.

But a new investigation of the stone age engraved panel Hendraburnick Quoit in Cornwall by Dr Andy Jones, found nearly 10 times the number of markings when viewed in moonlight or very low sunlight from the south east.

US military departments will not be allowed to use Kaspersky anti-virus software, because, as US officials believe, Russian authorities exert great influence on the company.

It is worth noting that it was specialists of Kaspersky Lab who could detect the hackers responsible for recent cyber attacks. Leading analyst of the company Alexander Gostev said that the attack most likely came from North Korea.

IS FLYING FIRST CLASS A WASTE OF MONEY?

The maxim that “you get what you pay for” could have been coined for modern air travel. Never has the metaphorical distance between the front and back of a plane felt so gaping. Today’s economy-class passengers overwhelmingly choose their flights on the basis of price, with little regard for the level of service they receive. Even as we moan that airlines are squeezing more seats into cattle-class, few of us click onto the second page of a Skyscanner search to find something more convivial. In becoming more stingy, airlines are giving us exactly what we are asking for.

One of Theresa May’s first speeches as party leader has been likened to Adolf Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ by Liberal Democrat leadership hopeful Vince Cable.

The former Business Secretary launched a scathing attack on May’s first Conservative Party Conference speech last year, where she told attendees that “citizens of the world” are actually “citizens of nowhere.”

Cable, whose late-wife Olympia was originally from Kenya, hit out at the remark.

“It could’ve been taken out of Mein Kampf. I think that’s where it came from, wasn’t it? ‘Rootless cosmopolitans’?” Cable told the New Statesman magazine on Wednesday.

“It was out of character for her.”

May faced criticism following her 2016 party conference speech, in which she appeared to be pushing a kind of post-Brexit nationalism.

“Today, too many people in positions of power behave as though they have more in common with international elites than with the people down the road, the people they employ, the people they pass on the street,” she told Tory delegates.

“But, if you believe you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere.

“You don’t understand what citizenship means.”

Tory MP Mims Davies contested Cable’s remarks.

“It is disappointing and surprising that such an experienced politician, who wants to lead the Liberal Democrats, chooses to throw around Nazi slurs like Ken Livingstone.

“Vince Cable should reconsider and retract this ill-judged comment.”

Although the term “rootless” did not appear in Mein Kampf, it was used in Russia’s Soviet era newspaper Pravda to describe Jewish intellectuals.

Merkel takes aim at US policy ahead of G20 meeting with Trump
German Chancellor Angela Merkel says Berlin can no longer rely on the US when it comes to the UN, the Middle East, or European security. Her comments come ahead of a planned meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
Merkel first said in May that Europe needs to take its fate in its own hands, stating that “the times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out…”
When asked by German weekly Die Zeit if she would stand by those words today, Merkel answered in the affirmative, specifically mentioning the US.

Hashd Al-Shaabi Commander: US in Pursuit of More Plots in Post-ISIL Iraq

Hashd Al-Shaabi Commander: US in Pursuit of More Plots in Post-ISIL Iraq
TEHRAN (FNA)- A commander of Hashd al-Shaabi (Iraqi volunteer forces) said the US intends to maintain its military presence in Iraq even after the annihilation of the ISIL terrorist group in a bid to carry out more plots against the country.

"The Americans are in the operations room as military advisors to give advice to the security bodies, including the army and the interior ministry but we in Hashd al-Shaabi don’t need the Americans," the commander said on Sunday.

Asked about the rumors about the deployment of Blackwater security firm forces at the Iraqi-Syrian borders, he said that the Central government has agreed with its presence but Blackwater has no power to control the borders or fight against the ISIL.

"The US presence in Iraq is aimed at fomenting and practicing seditions specially in the post-ISIL era," the commander warned.

Earlier this week, Hezbollah al-Nujaba, a major Iraqi Shiite resistance movement fighting the ISIL, had also warned that entrusting the infamous US security firm, Blackwater, with establishment of security at Baghdad-Amman highway threatens Iraq's national security.

"Blackwater attempts to conceal its identity but we know the firm and its nature and the company's presence in this vital and strategic place threatens Iraq's national security," Spokesman of Iraq's Hezbollah Brigades Mohammad Mohi said on Tuesday.

Warning the Iraqi government against Blackwater's dark record of activities, he said that the country's national security shouldn’t be endangered by those who don’t attach any importance to Iraq's interests and merely act based on the US and Israel's benefits.

Reports said in May that Blackwater, an American security firm, had signed a contract with Iraq to return to the country 7 years after repeated scandals by the US security companies forced them out of the war-torn country.

The highway from Baghdad to Amman, Jordan, cuts through the insurgent badlands of the Western Iraqi desert, and these days any truck driver risks confrontation with roving groups of terrorists.

As part of an American attempt to secure influence in the Iraq after the fight against the ISIL, the US government has helped broker a deal between Iraq and Olive Group, a private security company, to establish and secure the country’s first toll highway.

Head of al-Anbar province's council Faleh al-Issawi said at the time that the US firm will start its work on June 15.

The deal would last for 25 years and is known as a concession agreement, meaning the Iraqi government would put no cash upfront. The multimillion-dollar investment by Olive Group, in theory, would be recouped by tolls.

In 2015, three former employees of the US private military contractor once known as Blackwater were sentenced to 30 years in prison and a fourth received a life sentence, closing a sordid chapter of the Iraq conflict relating to the 2007 Nisour Square massacre in Baghdad.

In October 2014, Paul Slough, Evan Liberty and Dustin Heard were found guilty of 13 charges of voluntary manslaughter and 17 charges of attempted manslaughter, while Nicholas Slatten, the team’s sniper who was the first to open fire, was convicted on a separate charge of first-degree murder.

Slatten was sentenced to life; Slough, Liberty and Heard got 30 years each.

“In killing and maiming unarmed civilians, these defendants acted unreasonably and without justification,” the US attorney’s office said in a statement. “In combination, the sheer amount of unnecessary human loss and suffering attributable to the defendants’ criminal conduct on September 16, 2007, is staggering.”

The massacre left 14 civilians dead and at least 17 wounded. “None of the victims was an insurgent, or posed any threat to the Raven 23 convoy,” the government said, in a sentencing memorandum filed to the court on.

Spokesman: Arms Dealers Seeking Darken Afghan Ties with Iran, Russia
TEHRAN (FNA)- A spokesman for Afghanistan's defense ministry rejected certain media reports claiming that Iran and Russia support the opposition groups in the country, stressing that the arms dealers seek to darken ties between Kabul and the two countries.

"The defense ministry has no documents or evidence showing that Russia and Iran support the armed opposition groups in Afghanistan," Deputy Spokesman of Afghan Defense Ministry General Mohammad Radmanesh said on Sunday.

"The arms dealers in the region are attempting to destroy Afghanistan's ties with certain countries and the atmosphere of trust among the states," he added.

Certain media reports had claimed earlier this week that Iran and Russia are supporting Taliban in Afghanistan.

Meantime, a prominent Russian analyst said on Tuesday that the US is troubling the Afghan peace talks to start a new war in the country and create security problems for Iran, China, Russian and the Central Asian states.

"The US is relying on instruments to create instability and destroy the peace process aimed at resolving the crisis in Afghanistan instead of helping the progress of peace talks and therefore, it has ended the mission of its special envoy to Afghanistan," Dmitry Nersesov was quoted as saying by Russia's Pravda news website.

"The US main goal of maintaining the chaotic situation in Afghanistan is hitting a blow to Iran because Afghanistan is in a highly proper geographical situation to be the US military base against Iran, Russia, the Central Asian states and China's Xinjiang region," he added.

In relevant remarks last month, a senior Afghan legislator revealed that the US helicopters have transferred a large number of ISIL terrorists to the province of Nangarhar in the Eastern parts of the country.

Last week, the US military helicopters transferred over 50 ISIL fighters to Barabad region of the town of Behsoud in Nangarhar province, Zaher Qadir said.

He also disclosed that a container full of military equipment was also delivered to the ISIL terrorists in Nari Obeh region of Nangarhar province.

Qadir called the US as the actual murderer of Afghan people, urging the government to pursue the issue.

Nangarhar was among the relatively calm provinces in Eastern Afghanistan but the Taliban and ISIL have recently increased their activities in some parts of the province in recent years.

North Korea: US Pushing Korean Peninsula to Brink of Nuclear War
TEHRAN (FNA)- North Korea issued a stern message regarding US military activities on the Korean Peninsula, warning that the US is pushing the peninsula to the brink of nuclear war.

“The US, with its dangerous military provocation, is pushing the risk of a nuclear war on the peninsula to a tipping point,” read an editorial on North Korea’s official newspaper Rodong Sinmun, presstv reported.

The article, published under the title “Don’t play with fire on a powder keg,” described the Korean Peninsula as the “world’s biggest tinderbox.”

A day earlier, US bombers, jointly with South Korean forces, had conducted live-fire drills near the border with the North in a show of force in response to North Korea’s recent ballistic missile launches.

Two US B-1B Lancers, deployed from the Anderson Air Base in Guam, flew close to the tense and heavily-fortified border between two Koreas and dropped weapons in a simulated destruction of an enemy ballistic missile launcher and underground facilities, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Pyongyang described the joint drill as a “dangerous military gambit of warmongers who are trying to ignite the fuse of a nuclear war on the peninsula.”

A small misjudgment or error can immediately lead to the beginning of a nuclear war, which will inevitably lead to another world war,” the Sunday editorial read.

Last week, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which Pyongyang claimed could “reach anywhere in the world.”

US intelligence agencies said the missile was most likely a new ICBM with an estimated range of 5,500 kilometers and capable of hitting Alaska.

The North is currently under a raft of crippling United Nations sanctions over its ballistic missile and military nuclear programs.

The US has adopted a war-like posture against the North, routinely conducting drills with North Korea’s regional adversaries.

The US has permanent military presence in South Korea, where it recently also deployed an advanced missile system.

North Korea accuses the US of plotting with its regional allies to overthrow the government in Pyongyang. It says it will not relinquish its nuclear deterrence unless the United States ends its hostile policy toward North Korea and dissolves the US-led UN command in South Korea.

RT2017/7/8
Moscow offers evidence to UN that N. Korea tested mid-range missile, not ICBM
Russia has provided evidence to the United Nations indicating that North Korea’s latest missile launch on July 4th tested an intermediate range rocket, despite the US’ insistence that it was an intercontinental ballistic missile.

“A Voronezh-type radar station deployed in the Irkutsk region monitored the launch of the Hwasong-14 medium-range ballistic missile (IRBM) from North Korea, which flew a distance of 510 kilometers (317 miles) in 14 minutes, reaching an altitude of 535 kilometers (332 miles), before landing in the Sea of Japan,” reads a letter from Russia’s UN mission addressed to the UN’s secretary-general and the chairman of the Security Council.

An illustration of the trajectory of the missile and the territory it covered during flight is included in an addition to the letter.

The evidence, compiled by the Russian Defense Ministry, was sent to the UN after a fierce Security Council debate over North Korea’s missile launch earlier this week, in which the UN’s assistant secretary-general backed the US assessment that the Hwasong-14 missile does, indeed, possess the technical characteristics to be called an ICBM.

“According to these parameters, the missile would have a range of roughly 6,700 kilometers [4,163 miles] if launched on a more typical trajectory, making it an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) according to a widely used definition,” the UN official said on Wednesday.

Based on North Korea’s claim and the Pentagon’s assessment that the rocket poses a new level of threat to the US and the region, the US ambassador to the UN dedicated the entire UNSC meeting to scrambling together a new set of sanctions to impose on Pyongyang. The Pentagon failed to share its own tracking data, however.

Understanding what type of missile was launched on July 4th launch is crucial to proceeding with a North Korean settlement. Unlike the US, which has not ruled out a military solution to the crisis, Russia and China have offered a peaceful resolution that would avoid placing further sanctions on the North Korean regime. Moscow has adamantly stated that new sanctions will only lead to a stalemate.

The plan proposed by Russia and China calls for Pyongyang to freeze its nuclear and missile testing, while Washington would suspend its military drills with South Korea on the Peninsula.

The plan also envisages both adversaries renouncing the use of force, while creating “peace mechanisms” on the Korean Peninsula.
