Militants Suspected of Beheading 9 Men in Kenya
TEHRAN (FNA)- Police announced that militants are suspected in the beheading of nine men in an overnight attack on a village in Kenya.

The attack took place in the coastal district of Lamu, coming just days after another assault in which militants from the Al-Shabaab group killed three policemen in a nearby village, RT reported.

Police and witnesses announced Saturday that nine people were killed in the latest incident.

"They raided Jima and Poromoko villages and killed nine men. They were slaughtered like chickens, using knives,” a witness told Reuters.

In a statement about the earlier incident, Lamu police underlined that the attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons. They killed three police officers and left another seriously injured.

The Somalia-based Al-Shabaab group, which has links to Al-Qaeda and ISIL, has carried out frequent attacks in Kenya in recent years.

The group has previously said that the attacks are retaliation for Nairobi sending troops into Somalia to conduct anti-terrorist operations.

US Arms Sales to Hit Record in 2017
TEHRAN (FNA)- According to a new analysis, US weapon exports to foreign countries this fiscal year is set to equal or surpass the $69 billion record reached in 2012.

American arms sales needing US congressional approval have already total $59 billion, according to research published by Roman Schweizer, a managing director and defense analyst at Cowen Washington Research Group, presstv reported.

Add “the big hardware purchases announced during President Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia” and the total is a new record, he said.

Schweizer’s study, published in The Fiscal Times on Saturday, cited uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration's foreign policy in Europe, Asia and the Middle East as the driving power pushing up arms sales.

“NATO has increased spending by $46 billion over the last three years, and 25 of 29 countries plan to increase spending this year,” Schweizer noted, adding that the European security dynamic had undergone fundamental changes due to the conflicts in Ukraine.

Schweizer said Asia-Pacific countries were buying more weapons “to counter China(’s)” threat”

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar are buying weapons “to counter Iran”, he said.

The analyst said countries across the globe will be buying weapons to defend themselves against ISIS (ISIL or Daesh), NATO and [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

“It’s tough to say what the final number will be. There are a bunch of deals in the pipeline that could be announced over the next three months to the end of the fiscal year,” wrote Schweizer in an email.

The United States sold over $40 billion worth of weapons last year, maintaining its position as the world’s dominant arms supplier.

US arms sales increased by around $4 billion in 2015 and represented about half of all weapons agreements globally, according to figures released by the Congressional Research Service, a public policy research arm of the US Congress.

France was far behind in second place at $15 billion in arms sales. Russia came in third with $11 billion. Next were China, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Britain and Israel.

UAE Paid $3bn to Finance Coup Attempt in Turkey
Mehmet Acet, a columnist for Yeni Safak daily, announced on Tuesday that Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu meant the United Arab Emirates when he recently hinted at a Muslim country that spent billions to topple the Turkish government in the coup in July 2016.

Cavusoglu said in recent remarks that a foreign country funneled money to the putschists while making efforts to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We know that a country provided $3 billion in financial support for the coup attempt in Turkey and exerted efforts to topple the government in illegal ways. On top of that, it is a Muslim country,” the Turkish foreign minister said, as quoted by Acet.

Acet elaborated on his claims in an interview to the Turkish media, saying sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry had confirmed that the country behind the coup was indeed the United Arab Emirates.

“The minister did not name the country. However, sources from the foreign ministry have confirmed that it was the UAE,” Acet told Daily Sabah newspaper.

2017/6/24 TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Saudi dissident figure took Mohammed bin Salman, the new crown prince of the country, responsible for the terrorist attack in the holy city of Mecca.
"Foiling the suicide attack in the Grand Mosque was a false-flag operation which was aimed at increasing popular support for bin Salman and covering up the developments related to bin Nayef's dethroning and its consequences," Hamza al-Hassan wrote on his webpage on Saturday.
The Saudi security forces claimed that they have foiled a terror plot targeting the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, exchanging gunfire with one of the suspects who blew himself up inside a home on Friday, the interior ministry said.
The ministry described the plot as part of “self-serving schemes managed from abroad”.
Five people, including a woman, were arrested in security operations in Mecca, the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news website said, citing interior ministry security spokesman Mansour al-Turki.Five security force members and six other people were injured, the report said.

US, Russia reach agreement on truce in southwestern Syria: Lavrov

The United States and Russia have reached a deal on a truce in southwestern Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday.

He said President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump agreed on the truce deal during talks held in a "constructive atmosphere" on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. Lavrov said the ceasefire would take effect from July 9.

Earlier, three US officials, who asked not to be named as they were not authorized to discuss the ceasefire publicly, said the truce was set to take effect Sunday at noon Damascus time. They did not elaborate on the deal and how it would be implemented.

The trio said Moscow and Washington had been discussing a potential deal for some time, but it only reached fruition in the run-up to Trump's first meeting with Putin.

Jordan's state news agency Petra reported that the kingdom was also part of the ceasefire.

The agreement is separate from "de-escalation zones" that were to be created under a deal mediated by Russia, Iran and Turkey during the fourth round of peace talks in Astana in May.

Syria has been hit by deadly foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. Russia and the United States have been supporting opposing sides in the conflict in Syria with Moscow backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Washington backing militants fighting to topple the Damascus government.
