シリアの和平は遠のいた ロン・ポール

‘They’re terrified that peace was going to break out’ – Ron Paul on US Syria strike

“A victory of neo-conservatives” – that’s how Ron Paul, a former member of the US House of Representatives and three-time presidential candidate, described the US strike on Syria, adding that he does not expect peace talks to resume any time soon.

Speaking to RT, Ron Paul said that there is no proof of Damascus’ guilt that could trigger such a rash and violent response from the US.

“I don't think the evidence is there, at least it hasn’t been presented, and they need a so-called excuse, they worked real hard, our government and their coalition.”

This is not the first time something like this has happened in Syria or elsewhere, Paul said, but now it is convenient to pay attention and react immediately.

“If any of this was true, I don’t know why they couldn’t wait and take a look at it. In 2013, there were similar stories that didn’t go anywhere, because with a little bit of a pause, there was a resistance to it built in our Congress and in the American people. They thought that it was a fraud and nothing like that was happening, and right now, I just can’t think of how it could conceivably be what they claim, because it’s helping ISIS, because it’s helping Al-Qaeda.”

“From my point of view, there was no need to rush. There was no threat to national security. They have to give a reason to do these things,” Paul added.

A factor that contributed to the speedy reaction was of course the US president, the politician told RT.

“I have no idea what his purpose was. Maybe he just didn’t want to hear the debate, because the last time they debated it, they lost. And this time, it was necessary for them to jump onto this, before people came to know what was really going on.”

The Syrian situation now is “a victory for neo-conservatives, who’ve been looking for Assad to go,” Paul said.

“They want to get rid of him, and you have to look for who is involved in that. Unfortunately, they are the ones who are winning out on this, and the radicals, too! There is a bit of hypocrisy going on here, because at one minute we say, well, maybe Assad has to stay, the next day he has to go, and we’re there fighting ISIS and Al-Qaeda. At the same time, what we end up doing is we actually strengthen them! It is a mess.

“I don’t believe that our people or the American government should be the policemen of the world, it makes no sense, it causes us more trouble and more grief, it causes us more financial problems, and it’s hardly a way that we could defend our constitutional liberty.”

This policy clearly does not lead to peace, Paul told RT.

“The peace talks have ended now. They’re terrified that peace was going to break out! Al-Qaeda was on the run, peace talks were happening, and all of a sudden, they had to change, and this changes things dramatically! I don’t expect peace talks anytime soon or in the distant future.”

Last but not least, the politician spoke out about the deeper reasons – and potential disastrous consequences – of the latest attack’s timing.

“I was wondering about the fact that the announcement came when Trump was talking to Xi [Jinping, the Chinese president]. And of course, [North] Korea’s high on the list of targets for our president and our administration. It might be a warning: this is what’s going to happen to you if you don’t do what we tell you. I just don’t like us being involved in so many countries, in their internal affairs; I think it’s so detrimental.”

Airbase hit by US missiles ‘heavily involved’ in anti-ISIS campaign – relative of strike victim

The US bombardment of the Syrian airbase only serves to encourage Islamic State terrorists as the base was actively involved in the anti-terrorist campaign, including in Palmyra and Raqqa, a man whose relative was killed in the airstrike told RT.

RT spoke to Qusai Nasr from Homs, who lost a relative when the US attacked the Shayrat airfield with dozens of Tomahawk missiles early Friday.

“All of the officers [stationed] there have actually taken part in the Syrian campaign against ISIS [Islamic State],” Nasr said, referring to the base, which is located near Homs.

According to Nasr, 15 people were killed in the airstrike although it has not led to an extensive damage to the airfield. The airstrike, however, resulted in the death of five officers and soldiers who were at the base, he said.

The pretext for the attack, that the Syrian government and the air force stationed at the base in particular, were allegedly behind the chemical incident in rebel-held Idlib province on Tuesday, is hard to believe, Nasr argues.

“There is no evidence that the chemical attack was led by [Syrian aircraft] from this spot,” Nasr said, adding that neither the US nor rebels “show evidence of an aerial strike, the aerial deployment of the chemical weapon.”

“If it was the case thousands of people might have been killed in a town that has a lot of people inside but the number that they said, and I think, they are exaggerating, are very, very little,” he added.

While the strike has dealt little damage to the key airbase infrastructure, it will embolden terrorists, as was the case when the US-led coalition “mistakenly” launched an hour-long raid on the Syrian army positions in Deir ez-Zor in September, killing up to some 100 soldiers and injuring 100 more.

“On the same day of [the Deir ez-Zor] attack, ISIS launched a massive attack on the Syrian army and they gained ground. Today also after the attack on Shayrat Airbase, there was also an attack on the Syrian post in eastern Homs [province] that the Syria army managed to repel,” Nasr said.

Earlier, it was reported that the Syrian forces struggled to quash the terrorist offensive in the area due to the lack of air support from the airbase.

Homs Governor Talal Barazi told RT on Friday that Islamic State attempted to use the airstrike to gain control of strategic oil areas near Palmyra, but the Syrian army thwarted the move.

Judging by the developments on the ground, Nasr said that the US attack “actually helps the terrorists, and helps ISIL and Al-Nusra [Front militants].”

“ISIL and Al-Nusra are actually put on the terrorism list by the US. It is really strange that the United States would attack an airbase that is heavily involved in a campaign against ISIL.”

Speaking to RT earlier on Friday, Homs Governor Barazi said that 14 people were killed in the strike, including nine civilians. At least thirteen women and children, living in the nearby villages, have been injured in the attack, he said.

The strike has caused mixed reaction within international community. While Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey and Syrian rebels and a number of western countries, including the UK, France and Germany, have expressed support for Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to attack Syria, others, including Russia, Iran and Bolivia have decried the strike as unwarranted aggression, bearing resemblance to the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Russia’s President Putin has denounced the strike as an act of “aggression against a sovereign nation” while Russian deputy acting envoy to the UN, Vladimir Safronkov, said it had “raised the spirits of terrorists,” accusing Washington of unwillingness to conduct a “real investigation” in the suspected chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun.

Russian military bases in Syria under ‘ensured’ air defense cover − MoD after US strike

Russia’s S-400 and S-300 anti-missile complexes are among the systems providing protection for its military bases in Syria, the Defense Ministry said following Washington’s missile attack.

The S-400 Triumph missile system and the Pantsir complex, which is a short to medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system, are ensuring the protection of Russia’s Air Force at the Khmeimim airbase in Syria, Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov told the media on Friday.

Additional defense systems, including S-300 complexes, have been deployed to provide “guaranteed” cover for a station in the Syrian port of Tartus that provides technical support for the Russian Navy, Konashenkov added.

“Combat units of Russia’s air defense systems in Syria are on duty 24/7,” Konashenkov said.

The S-300 missile systems were deployed at Syria’s port of Tartus in 2016, to provide protection for both the base and Russian military ships in Syrian waters. The S-400 air defense complex, the Russian Army’s most modern air defense system, was delivered to Syria in November of 2015, after a Russian Su-24 fighter jet on an anti-terrorist mission in Syria was shot down by a Turkish aircraft.

While the Pantsir complexes protect the Russian military and its infrastructure from lower-flying missiles, Russia also has Bastion coastal defense missile systems in Syria that can engage a target both in the water and on land at a distance of up to 450 kilometers (280 miles).

At the same time, Syria’s S-200 air defense systems have been restored with Russia’s help, TASS reported, adding that those complexes are also deployed to provide protection for the Russian military in eastern Syria.

The efficiency of the Syrian air defense systems will be beefed up, Konashenkov told reporters several hours after the US conducted a missile strike on a Syrian airfield.

“To provide cover for the most sensitive targets of the Syrian infrastructure a set of measures to bolster” the defense systems would be “shortly implemented,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the US launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles on the Syrian military’s Shayrat airfield in Homs province. The attack killed at least six people and injured several others.
